I am not a mac user, but I do support users who use macs. So my experience is purely from a support point of view. Excel / Powerpoint / Word seem alot better with 2016. Outlook is still garbage, it handles large local databases poorly (lag, search not working etc) and has obscure differences to the Windows counterpart. One weird difference, If you have full exchange permissions to a mailbox, in Outlook for Windows it will automatically show up / open in Outlook. In the mac equivalent I have to manually add it.
Do they support PST import / export yet? From memory Outlook for mac still uses the OLK database? Still no PST import/export, but Microsoft's been trying to eliminate that for some time now. And good riddance if you ask me. At a previous job I had users with 10GB+ PST archives and kept wondering why Outlook routinely shit the bed. Absolute nightmare trying to keep Outlook limping along trying to load Gigabytes' worth of archives. As for the additional mailboxes needing addition manually on Mac, that's due to the fact Outlook for windows gets that information from Active Directory and your admin still hasn't configured outlook web services' auto-configuration correctly.
I have yet to work in an Exchange On-prem environment where the admin had the environment working correctly for autoconfig to work over OWS. With O365 it should work a peach because your admin can't fuck it up. However, I've never used Outlook for Mac outside an exchange environment. I cannot speak to its performance with IMAP. This is with 365 and no AD, I'm the admin who hasn't configured things correctly lol. This behavior is consistent though, automatic in Windows and not in Mac.
You may be right, there may be something further to consider, it's not a huge issue just an annoyance. The only users I have using macs are by coincidence smaller businesses without domain controllers. My experience is also mostly exchange / 365 based, IMAP never works too spectacularly anyway. The PST thing is a catch 22, when bringing on new customers the ones with Macs are a nightmare. Last I checked (this was maybe a year and a half ago so memory is fuzzy), I had a client with a good 20gb of mail in a royally mangled Mac (Outlook). In order to actually get all that information out, I had to purchase a separate tool which would export it to a PST and then import into 365 with Outlook for Windows.
There was no proper MS approved path for this from memory, or there was a reason I couldn't use it. (Possibly the corruption on the DB). If it were a PST, I'd have run PST Repair let it scrap the bad data and imported it with Outlook or that god foresaken azure import interface (likely this one since it was so much data). I know in this instance it's the end users problem for letting it get to this state, but the paths for resolution on Microsoft's part could use some work to say the least. At the very least we should have the ability to import / export into a format that is supported on both Mac and Windows.
